About me
I am a lawyer writing under the pen name HesterPrynne. These days I advocate primarily on behalf of people in Massachusetts who are living in poverty. In prior jobs I have worked in each branch of Massachusetts government, and so have had the opportunity to observe our state’s legal system from the perspectives of those who draft, litigate, construe and are subject to our laws.
I hope that this blog reflects the truth of an observation by the theologian Reinhold Niebuhr — that our human capacity for justice makes democracy possible and that our human inclination toward injustice makes democracy necessary.
About this blog
The header picture is of the Founders Memorial, which commemorates the 300th anniversary of the founding of Boston in 1630. It is located on a north entrance to the Boston Common along Beacon Street. I chose the picture despite the fact that the Memorial is an affront to the indigenous people who are represented on the sidelines: that injury should not be forgotten.
